Universal Boards Rules [Updated 27-04-16]

Recent Changes:

The rules on EU Boards have always been a little lighter than NA - this wasn't an oversight, this was by design. We wanted to foster and encourage mature discussions, and felt that things such as smurf bans were not required on these boards.

Unfortunately it seems that this is not the case. As attempts are made to disrupt the flow of the boards and intentionally point out these gaps that we left, we've had to fill them for completeness. We hope that these rules rarely have to be enforced, but they're there incase we have to fall back on them.

As a reminder based on this however, all posts are subject to moderation based on the decision of the mod team. A post doesn't explicitly have to break these rules to be moderated - our moderators will do what they feel they need to to keep the boards age appropriate and discussions civil and constructive. As always moderation is kept in constant check, however we have trust in our moderators that they will make a call based on their best judgement.

Introduction:

No one likes rules, but some are necessary for people to co-exist with one another, and to keep an environment where we all can feel safe in expressing and discussing our opinions. These rules were created to prevent total chaos, and we've made a lot of changes alongside our volunteers and you, the community.

Our moderation team that watch the boards will make sure that content posted is in compliance with the rules. Please take a moment to read them, and if you find content in violation, please use the report button to help us out!

Please note that the rules below aren't going to define everything that will be moderated, but one of the goals with these rules were to reduce as much ambiguity as possible. As such, we reserve the right to moderate any content on the Boards at our discretion, should we feel it's necessary.

Here goes...

tl;dr: respect each other, no racism, sexism, causing conflict, no porn, no gore, no spam, follow each community's rules, no advertising, no naming and shaming, no hacks, no phishing, no harassment. No problem.

Respect Your Fellow Players, and Their Opinions

We’re aiming for the most sportsmanlike gaming community in the world, in-game and outside the game. Just because you’re anonymous doesn’t mean you can be disrespectful. Posts that cross the line will be deleted. Repeat offenders may be permanently kicked out.

We’re aiming for the most sportsmanlike gaming community in the world, in-game and outside the game. Just because you’re anonymous doesn’t mean you can be disrespectful. Posts that cross the line will be deleted. Repeat offenders may be permanently kicked out.

Conversely, however - we give you a platform to voice your opinion so long as it fits within the rules and audience of the boards. This isn't "no holds barred". Discussions that are extremely controversial, have potential to incite hatred, or are simply posted in the interest of provoking a negative response, will also be removed. We want to encourage good discussions, not necessarily heated ones.

Moderators will take action against the following:

  • Players harrassing others;
  • Players posting content that is deemed to be offensive;
  • Players attacking other players based on their opinions, language/grammar, ranked status etc.
  • Players making baseless complaints or contesting private matters that isn't relevant to an active discussion.

Provoking/Trolling

Debating a topic, or holding a strong opinion on a topic is acceptable, however making posts simply to provoke conflict or incite, bait, or mock others who disagree with you is not.

Threads or comments that are created with the intention to create a strong negative or emotional reaction, provoke conflict etc, are considered trolling. Debating a topic, or holding a strong opinion on a topic is acceptable, however making posts simply to provoke conflict or incite, bait, or mock others who disagree with you is not.

Please do not respond to attempts to provoke, troll or bait you. Posts you feel violate the Universal guidelines should be reported using the "Report" button.

Reporting Other Players (aka Naming and Shaming)

Please don't report a potentially misbehaving player in these boards. If you see or hear about another person breaking the rules, send us a ticket directly so we can investigate and take action if necessary.

Please don't report a potentially misbehaving player in these boards. If you see or hear about another person breaking the rules, send us a ticket directly so we can investigate and take action if necessary. We know that players report publicly with the best intentions, but it often leads to a witchhunt, rarely resulting in a positive discussion.

We’ll be taking action against players who have violated rules, so please report these players correctly.

Moderators will be looking for the following:

  • Posts that accuse others of being toxic players in-game
  • Posts accusing others of malicious activity
  • Posts that accuse others of cheating or using illegal services
  • Posts accusing others of trolling in the boards (there’s a report button for that)
  • Posts claiming to have "reported" someone (There's no need to post this information)

Illegal Activity

Illegal activity is just that. Discussion of anything like this will result in removal, and more than likely a harsh suspension or permaban to your account.

Harassment and Threats

Any sort of harassment - whether based on opinion, or especially that which is based on a part of someone's character, including but not limited to: race, nationality, gender identity, sexual orientation, religious beliefs, disability, etc - will not be tolerated in any form, whether it is directed towards the affected individual or not.

We touched on this slightly already, but we felt it deserved it's own section.

Threats of any kind, whether they be directed at Riot, Players, whomever - will not be tolerated. If you threaten members of our community, you will be removed from it, and if we think you're in any way serious this will be passed on to the relevant authorities for investigation.

No Mature Content

All of us want this to be a reasonably safe environment for children, and at the same time, we won’t tolerate childish behaviour. With that in mind, many players vary in age, and there are some things that children and young adults shouldn't see.

All of us want this to be a reasonably safe environment for children, and at the same time, we won’t tolerate childish behaviour. With that in mind, many players vary in age, and there are some things that children and young adults shouldn't see. We don’t want to see any nudity, or real life gore. Violations of this rule will be dealt with swiftly, and seriously. You could lose your in-game account if you mess up here.

Moderators will look for the following:

  • Pornographic materials of any kind
  • Imagery that show real life depictions of gore, death, horrifically violent acts, etc
  • Art that shows nudity (full or partial), or sexually explicit acts or depictions of those acts
  • lLinks to sites showing any of the above.

No Spamming

Spam isn't difficult to avoid. We want to encourage good, meaningful discussions on the boards - and spam is counterproductive to that.

Spam isn't difficult to avoid. We want to encourage good, meaningful discussions on the boards - and spam is counterproductive to that.

While there's a limited amount of "grey area" on what is spam and what isn't, the following are good guidelines to ensure you're not stepping on the wrong side of that grey area - we will take context into consideration (IE: if a topic goes 'off topic' by accident), but intentionally stepping on the wrong side of the spam line will result in the removal of the post.

Moderators will look for the following:

  • Repeatedly posting the same content.
  • Posting the same content in multiple boards
  • Posting entirely irrelevant content on a topic and derailing it.
  • Making a post that has entirely no purpose or discussion value.
  • Referral links, "free st00f" links, etc. No no no.
  • Excessive swearing.
  • Begging. Sorry guys, while everyone loves free stuff, begging the community isn't welcome. You can always apply for giveaways and tournaments etc. but going out of your way to post "Give me x skin because I love y" will be removed.

Account, Product, & Service Promotion

If you’re trying to promote or sell a product or service, there are other websites for that. If you’re trying to sell a game account or service that violates our TOS, please don’t;

If you’re trying to promote or sell a product or service, there are other websites for that. If you’re trying to sell a game account or service that violates our TOS, please don’t;

however, if you absolutely have to try it here, expect that you’ll be losing access to the boards and possibly your game account.

TL;DR: posts attempting to sell anything will be removed. Serious offenders will feel the wrath of the banhammer.

Moderators will be looking for the following:

  • Advertising for product sales of any kind
  • Advertising for services offered by individuals or companies

Hacks & illegal downloads

Do not share links or information related to obtaining illegal software. To us, this includes cheats or exploits that create an unfair advantage in-game. We’ll be removing all links and posts that give such information.

Do not share links or information related to obtaining illegal software. To us, this includes cheats or exploits that create an unfair advantage in-game. We’ll be removing all links and posts that give such information. Repeat offenders will lose access to the boards, and in some cases, a lot more.

Moderators will be looking for the following things:

  • Posts with links to download software that give an unfair advantage in-game
  • Posts that link to pirated movies, music, software, etc.
  • Discussions that imply, promote, or reference illegal downloads. Saying "someone hacked me" is very different from "someone hacked me using " - this will be treated as you explicitly advertising this product.

Phishing & Scamming

Trying to get a leg up on others through scamming, or forcing an account breach is a serious no-no. This is theft. It’s stealing from your fellow players. It’s pretty unfair.

Trying to get a leg up on others through scamming, or forcing an account breach is a serious no-no. This is theft. It’s stealing from your fellow players. It’s pretty unfair. We have a whole team at Riot Games dedicated to battling this and they take it seriously.

Moderators will be looking for the following things:

  • Posts about services claiming to be an RP generator
  • Links to phishing sites
  • Posts designed to bait someone into a trap

If we cannot verify the validity or security of a site, we may use our discretion to remove this for the security of the community. This may include legit links unfortunately, but we play on the safer side if we're unable to confirm this - especially sites asking for personal details and signups.

Inappropriate Discussions

While you may be an adult and want to talk about adult things, these boards are not the place for that. This is a gaming community, not a place to discuss political agenda's.

League of Legends caters to a wide audience of players, some as young as 12 years old. While you may be an adult and want to talk about adult things, these boards are not the place for that. This is a gaming community, not a place to discuss political agenda's. Also while something may be legal in your country, keep in mind that it may not be in other places within Europe, and we've got to go with the lowest common denominator in these sorts of discussions.

Moderators will be looking for discussions around things such as:

  • Religion
  • Sex
  • Politics
  • Any social issues, though some exceptions may be appropriate (e.g., internet legislation)

While you may genuinely be trying to have a mature discussion, if our moderators feel like the discussion has potential to derail and become something not fit for these boards, we may proactively remove these sorts of threads. Our moderators will give you a detailed explanation as to why in these instances.

Spoilers

If you're posting a spoiler filled thread, that's fine so long as you preface it with a warning (IE: Put [SPOILER] in the title. If you don't do this, you're ruining the experience for others, and we will remove these discussions. This will be at moderator discretion to decide how soon is "too soon" without the spoiler tag.

Everybody loves a good movie/tv show/game etc. - and these boards can be the perfect place to talk about them. However just because you and your friends have seen it, doesn't mean everybody here has.

Moderators will be looking for things such as:

  • Actual spoilers
  • Joke spoilers that directly reference the release
  • Posts that encourage others to post spoilers

This hasn't been much of an issue in the past, and we hope to not have to enforce this - but please respect your fellow players and understand they may be excited to experience something first hand without the bitter taste of a spoiler

Boards Ban Evasion

If you're issued with a permanent ban, it's because you refused to listen to the warnings and advice given prior. If you return to the boards with another account with the intentions of doing the same thing that's already got you banned, we reserve the right to banhammer your smurf accounts too.

We quite strongly believe in reform, however if everyone was willing to form, permanent bans wouldn't exist. If you're issued with a permanent ban, it's because you refused to listen to the warnings and advice given prior. If you return to the boards with another account with the intentions of doing the same thing that's already got you banned, we reserve the right to banhammer your smurf accounts too.

Moderators will be looking for players that:

  • Post on another account after receiving a permanent Boards suspension for severe or multiple violations.
  • Post on behalf of a player who has received a permanent Boards suspension for severe or multiple violations.

It's unfortunate that we've had to bring this rule over to the EU boards as it's something we've rarely had issues with in the past. Unfortunately there's just some persistent attempts at disrupting the boards and ruining the experience for others, so we're explicitly adding this one.

Adhere to Board Guidelines

We want each community to have its own unique culture, which makes it important for you to post content in the correct place. Each board has detailed Guidelines that should make clear what’s acceptable, and what’s not.

We want each community to have its own unique culture, which makes it important for you to post content in the correct place. Each board has detailed Guidelines that should make clear what’s acceptable, and what’s not.

Moderators of each sub-community will evaluate your post against the Universal Rules and the customised Guidelines set for the official boards. Content that isn't appropriate for the board will be removed.
