What's the point in having Divisions if matchmaking is based on MMR?

I'm just curious. I just don't understand why we have Divisions in place if the games are balanced around MMR. For example, I am currently Silver but play with Gold and Plat players, sometimes being the only (or 1 of 2) Silver player(s) in the game. **Shouldn't I be climbing out of Silver proving I can beat other Silver players? And not by having to beat Gold and Plat players.** - EDIT: this is my main "issue" I have regarding this subject. That's the thing that makes the most logical sense in my mind. **Now, I'm not trying to whine and complain as it's going fine** for me at the moment, but I just don't see the point of the system being the way it is. The way I see it, we should climb divisions by being better than the players in the division itself (or more realistically the Tier at least), not by having to face players higher up just because our MMR is increasing faster than the climb is (yes you can skip divisions but I'm on a 73% winrate in like 44 games and haven't skipped any so that arguement is of no value to me at the moment). Even if you take into account the possibility of skipping divisions, the connection between Divisions, MMR, and Matchmaking is not quite right in my opinion. What do you guys think? Is there a specific reason for things being the way they are?
